World AIDS Day 2008

General

Approximately 5000 persons stormed the lawns of Devon House on Monday, December 1, 2008 to get their free HIV test as well as to participate in the numerous empowerment and entertainment activities.
Booth holders included the National HIV/STI Programme in collaboration with the South East Regional Health Authority, the Vaccine Trials Unit, CPTC, CARIMAC, the Jamaica Defense Force, National Youth Service, Rise Life Management, JN+, Ministry of Labour and Social Security among others. Most of these booths displayed the work that they have been doing in the HIV/AIDS arena while the other skills-based entities provided practical “try-a-skill” opportunities.

The empowerment opportunities included at least three skilled areas from the HEART Trust NTA (tiling, computer repairs and hospitality), career advice from Choices Career Advice as well as Barbering and Cosmetology from Children First. These booths were the most successful and attracted a large number of persons.
